i got ears full of Korn

Hello all of you people who actually read the blog! I am glad you do and hope that you continue to do so. also tell your friends to tell their friends to tell their friends and so forth so we can spread all of this music around!

First off, I would like to say that I forgive alex twice... Once for not doing an indie song and the second time for not posting anything... you have to admit that she had a good excuse though. Although she can't raelly post ANY song if her computer crashed. Secondly, I would like to say that I dont own todays song so I'm just going to give you the name and the artist and have you go listen to it on Grooshark. Thirdly, I would like to apologize for having another really late bog post.

Today's song is by Korn with a backwards and capital r. Its from their latest album "Remember Who You Are" and the song is "Never Around." actually when you are searching for it on grooveshark, the band is Korn III.

This whole album is just absolutelyt amazing! i wasnt a Korn fan before this album and now they are one of my favorites! I love how everything is so raw and strange sounding yet make amazing music that is really good! I recently rediscovered "Freak on a Leash", one of their older hits and started to see it everywhere and loved the song. I started to listen to other korn songs and found that they werent what I had hoped for. Then I read in a british metal magazine (Metal Hammer) that they were going to come out with a new album in which they would go back to their original rawness. So I decided to check it and and low and behold, I LOVED IT!

I keep going back and forth between songs but at the moment "Never Around" is my favorite. Basically it has really raw everything and that just means gritty and coarse-like. if you dont know what I mean then just check out the song or the whole album. the singer kinda grow-sings and yell-sings but doesnt go as far as to scream. its very entertaining! well you guys might as well go listen to it so here is the link to grooveshark and then go explore Korn's new album!

Hmm...

Well, I'm sitting here thinking, what got posted on the blog the last few days?? So I come on here and look, and NOTHING!! That makes me sad.. Then I realized that it's my day to post, so I am happy. =D
But I'm on my laptop, and have a very limited supply of music right now.. =(
So, flipping through iTunes, I come across one of my favorite songs that I'd actually forgotten about! Yay!
But I know a lot of people probably won't like it.. Oh well!!

Or search for it on Grooveshark

But I really like this song. Okay, so it's pretty intense with the screaming and everything, but it's good. I love the lyrics. "Open your closed mind, and close your open mouth." That I think says so much about today's society. The musicianship in this song, and this band in general, is pretty awesome. And I really like how it kind of fades at the end, and it fades into piano. That's pretty sweet. Well, enjoy!

This isn't indie. - 04

Weeeeell hi. First off, Liz, loved your indie song (: Second off, Neil pleasedon'tgetmadifIdon'tdoanindiesong. BECAUSSSSEEE I want to make nicer titles, and my only redemption in my head is to mix things up a bit. If that made any sense at all.

(edit)

HI NEIL YOU'RE MY FAVE thanks for not disowning me! Now I would like to post, for real this time. The song I chose isn't really indie...apparently the genre is "emo" or some such rubbish. I suppose it could be considered that, but I do so love the band. It's pure quality.

Here we have "The Mixed Tape" by Jack's Mannequin. A lot of my music I like to listen to is fun and upbeat, but I also admire more poetic notes. Even if they are sad.

"The Mixed Tape" is a good heartbroken song. Andrew McMahon is amazing, putting his whole heart and soul in to the music. Give it a shot and just listen:

The Mixed Tape - Jack's Mannequin

"And where are you now?
And this is my mixed tape for her
It's like I wrote every note
With my own fingers"

you are a very groovy shark!

Hi everyone! First of all i would like to say sorry for posting so late. second of all, I would like to say that today I will not be posting a song due to no music being on the computer I am useing. But the thing im sharing with you is WAY better... Trust me...

So instead of downloading these songs that we have been posting and cluttering up your computer with random songs, you can go to this amazing website! Grooveshark is a music website where you can listen to any song any time, as long as you have the internet. Some of you have probably heard of something like this like playlist.com but Grooveshark is a million times better than all of the other ones. It even got into time magazine for being one of the 50 best websites!

One of the sollest things is that you can creat a free account and have them save your setlists so that you can go from computer to computer and still have all the music you like saved! You can also customize you home page to make it look really cool!

Now I know some of you are wondering "How can this be legal? Any music, any time, and I can replay them whenever I want? NO WAY!" well I assure you that this website is very legal and it is amazing! I use it to listen to music that I dont own. I actually find buying music not worth it anymore because I can just go onto grooveshark and listen to the same album anytime.

So now you've heard my little speil about this great websiteand now go check it out on your own!

An Indie of My Own..

First thing I have to say is,
SORRY ALEX!! Because I'm posting an indie today..
I was flipping through my iTunes playlist of songs I want to blog about, and this one really jumped out at me today. It's a perfect day for Steve Salazar. I can actually say that I've heard him live, and he is amazing!! I've heard him twice at a really cool coffee shop called Beaner's Central. It's even more exciting to listen to him live than it is to listen to his recordings. But, by no means am I saying don't listen to his recordings, because they are pretty k/a, if I do say so myself. Steve is a really cool guy who says stuff like, "Rad" and almost always types a smiley face after what he has to say. I asked him if I could blog about him, and what song, and he said to do "Contradicting Dreams" or something. So "Contradicting Dreams" is exactly what I'm doing.

I love Steve's music. He's more of an acoustic indie, just him and the guitar, for the most part. On recordings, he's added some other stuff in, and he's working on a full length studio album that's actually going to have some full band stuff.

One of my favorite things about Steve is how well his voice melds together with his guitar. And in this song, the lyrics are practically the story of my life in some ways. So, just listen to this and let yourself melt into Steve's easy rhythm and amazing voice in this song. And if you like it, go check him out on facebook!!

The Indie - 03

Maybe my titles aren't as interesting as the other bloggers' titles? At least not as attention grabbing...still if I post anything else, I'll add a fun title. Promise. But as of this moment, organization is important for your indie music listening. : )

Today is a perfect day for She&Him. She&Him is an indie band consisting of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. I adore this band. Although they only started recording around 2006, all of their music sounds a lot like an album right out of the 1960's. Their throw-back sound makes them unique in a happy, elated fashion. Nine times out of ten She&Him is upbeat, with the remaining one portion being softer and more melancholy.

The song I've chosen is called "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?". I believe it is one of the better known songs by the duo; a great tune with two music videos to boot. Go check them out after you click on my link; they're kind of cute.

This song's key feature(it's a pun. wait for it..) is that of the piano. Deschanel is truly a great pianist; each note is contributing to the folk-like sound. Towards the end she switches to a'capella, slowly fading away until the instruments start right back up. As a whole, "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" is a quaint little love song.

Living With the Beatles

The Beatles are legends, I don't think there's much more to say about that. I couldn't even try to write about the enormous influence they've had on music, history, and culture, but I can try to describe how they've influenced me.

They stopped playing as a group long before I was even capable of appreciating music, but they're still my favorite band. That's one thing that really amazes me; they're loved not just by adults who grew up when the Beatles were making albums, but by kids my age. I won't be surprised if my kids and grandkids have the songs "Eight Days a Week," "A Hard Day's Night," and "Strawberry Fields" on their futuristic ipods built into their brains.

I have more than 200 of their songs, and can listen to them over and over. As a drummer, I can almost sing the drum parts to certain songs better than the melody, and I put on headphones and drum along with Ringo imagining Paul, John, and George standing around me. I can't really say that I have 'favorites,' but when I look up at those Beatles posters on my wall there are certain songs that come to mind. "Yesterday," "A Hard Day's Night," "I am the Walrus," "Penny Lane,""Hello Goodbye," "Let it Be," "Octopus's Garden," "Help," "Glass Onion," and many more.

That last one, "Glass Onion" is one of the few songs I've enjoyed having stuck in my head. The first thing about that song that love, is the drums. Maybe it's just because I play drums, but when I hear that fill in the beginning, perks up my ears, and I can't help but play the air drums. It's playing in the background as I write this, and on top of that driving beat, I hear those memorable lyrics. "Looking through a glass onion -break- " and the fill, "badup badup pshh!" "Strawberry fields" and "the walrus" cleverly refer to other famous Beatles songs. Before long, I'm playing air drums and singing along, and have completely forgotten what was happening before. As the song ends and the next on the legendary White Album : "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" play, I realize how it's yet another song I'd consider one of my 'favorites.'

You can get "Glass Onion" on the White Album and other Beatles albums here on Amazon. Buy them, if you haven't already!

(if you didn't get it before, With the Beatles is the title of a Beatles album)

The echoes of prog

I was looking through my music the other day and came across echolyn and I remembered how awesome they are so I decided to post a song here. They are a prog rock band that I had seen in concert before (the NearFest that I mentioned before). They were absolutely amazing and my dad and I got all of their CD's. I only have two of them on this computer but its still amazing. It is a prog song so it will be longer than normal. This on is about 5:45 but the whole song is amazing!

This song is very rockish in the beginning then goes to prog solos then slow then back to the solos and rock. At point it has weird time signatures, mostly in the beginning with the drums. I really love this song because of the mix of the instruments and the amazing talent of all of the musicians. For those of you familiar with Jethro Tull, the singing tone kind of reminds me of them. I think this song is amazing and i don't see why some of these prog bands aren't more famous but you're going to have to decide for your self. Also, it would help us all a lot if you people who download the music, could tell us what you think of it so we can know what our followers think. and talking of followers you should follow this blog! well have fun listening to the music!

Blast From The Past.

I've got a feeling that with a title like that, people are probably thinking like 80's music or something.
Well, we're going back a little bit farther than that. But only a little.
We're going back to 1939.
The beginning of World War 2 and the era of big band swing.

Do me a favor, and try to imagine yourself in a dance club back in 1939. There's the big wooden dance floor and a stage up front. Set up on the stage is Glenn Miller and his jazz orchestra. 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, piano, bass and drums. It's a perfectly balanced big band. They play the song In The Mood (the one I'm giving you today) and everyone begins to dance. Swing dance. Men in suits and women in flowing dresses. Picture yourself and your love dancing. It's wonderful, isn't it??

This has got to be one of my favorite jazz charts. And I can say for a fact that it's fun, yet difficult to play. I played the 2nd tenor sax part with my school's jazz ensemble. It was so much fun.

In The Mood is a big band swing standard. From the roaring brass section to the aggressive saxes. It's the epitome of perfection for the jazz lover. The up-beat tempo was (and is) swing. Just that typical swing style.

If you're a little iffy on the whole simply instrumental thing, too bad. This is pure enjoyment to listen to. I always get the urge to sing along. Okay, well scat along. The beginning: "Ba da la bob bob bob sha dooby doo ba dooby da ba daaa.."
Try it, and enjoy!! =)

The Indie - 02

Hallo everyone and goood evening. >.<

Today I was searching through my iTunes to find the perfect song. (which, mind you, is quite a task with the number of songs I possess) Hopefully I've found just the right one...by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Little Shadow".

From the album "It's Blitz!" this song is featured originally and acoustically. Both versions are good, but I have the original linked for you. I particularly admire the vocals in this song, mostly because Karen O has an amazing voice to begin with. The chords just bring that out and complement the instruments.

All in all a sweet song, with few lyrics that leave the listener to interpret any way they like. I think of it as a lonely song...but as I said interpretation is up in the air. Maybe more mellow than rock...but hey, we all could use a little variety (;

"Patience, shadow
With all your sight there's no sight to see
Little shadow, little shadow
To the night, will you follow me?"

Bank of mutual AWESOMENESS!!!

Hi everyone! How's it goin? well I have a great song for you today. This one is Miserere Alla Storia by Banco del Mutuo Socorrso (Banco for short). Banco is an Italian progressive rock band (meaning they will be singing in Italian). Basically progressive rock is experimental rock. Early Yes, Pink Floyd, or Genesis would be "prog" rock. Some characteristics of prog rock are weird time signatures, long guitar and keyboard solos, and all around awesomeness!

Banco is considered a "symphonic" prog band meaning they aren't rock but they are slower sorta... This was the first band that I heard that I knew was prog. I had listened to really early Pink Floyd and Syd Barret but never really knew what genre it fit into. I enjoyed the CD I was given so much that I went to not only on but two prog rock "festivals" that summer. the first one I went to, NearFest, where I got to see Banco live! it was an amazing experience. So for those of you who really enjoy this, maybe you should explore more prog bands and see how you like them. I will be posting more prog music later so look out for that!

Today, is a country day..

Well, I'm going to start out my first post with a little about me. I'm Liz. I'm high school senior and an epic band geek. I play flute, piccolo, tenor sax, bassoon and guitar. You could say I know quite a bit about music. Over the years, I've gone through phases with music, from classic rock & roll to pop to folk to country to jazz & classical to metal. Add a random dash of world music, such as Gaelic and Native American in there, and that's just about everything.

But today, I'm going to give y'all a little country song.

Kenny Chesney - Boats (4.24MB m4a)

It's called "Boats" and it's by Kenny Chesney.
This has to be one of my very favorite country songs, of all time. Chesney combines the twang of country with the smooth, easy feeling of the Caribbean islands.
In this song, Chesney's soothing voice swoons about the freedom of boats. The free-flowing rhythm actually give you the feeling that you're sitting on the deck of a sailboat somewhere in the ocean near the Caribbean. If you close your eyes and really imagine, you can feel the easy rocking of the boat from the waves. Maybe you can even smell and feel the salty spray of the ocean.
I always get lost in this song.
It's so simply beautiful.

The Indie - 01

Hi all, this is Alex with some indie jams (; Today's is cut short some..but only due to mediafire not behaving nicely.
I think I should point out that "indie" just means independent; indie bands are generally not signed on to major record labels. In my opinion, indie bands produce some of the best music because they control their own production and choose how they want their music to sound. Such is the case for this song, Party Traumatic, by Black Kids.

I love Party Traumatic. The guitar and piano complement each other during the whole song. Plus the lyrics are just fun and upbeat!
If you listen to the complete album, you'll hear a similar sound in all of the songs. It's a little different (okay, quite a bit) than Neil's post from yesterday, but definitely worthwhile to download...:

Welcome!!!

Welcome to the wonderful blog of music. This blog is all about...well, music that my friends and I listen to and like enough to share with you guys. At the moment there are only two of us, Me (Neil Vaidyanathan), and Alex Livesay, but i hope to convince more of my friends to help out. I will be working on most of the stuff but Alex will be working on more of the indie stuff. This is an experiment that we both hope will work so please try to stick with us if it seems like we are having difficulties... we probably are.

Well to start you off listening to something, here is Opeth. Opeth is a metal band that combines both melodic singing with heavy screamo. I think this is the band that kinda got me into more of the screamo scene. I still don't like full on screaming but when its set to good music and has at least some singing in it I like it.

Now before I go on, I want to say that this is NOT a metal blog. This is a blog exploring all of the different sides of music. We will go from metal to classical to everything in between. The only reason I started with this is because it was the only thing on the computer I was working on at the time. So just because you don't like this first song, that doesn't mean that you won't like the next one, or the next..... or the next... so now that we have that sorted out, I'll continue.

This song is very bi-polar and by that I mean that it has really heavy parts where its just screaming but then the mellow parts are very, well, mellow and this is where he sings. Its a very interesting song... so here it is and enjoy!!! : )

Opeth - Ghost of Peridition (9.67 MB MP3)
